Basel string quartet

The Basler String Quartet was founded in 1996 at the Basel Music Academy . Since then it has been supported by high-ranking musicians such as Walter Levin and Hatto Beyerle , as well as by the Alban Berg Quartet . It received further impulses from members of the Amadeus Quartet and the Emerson String Quartet , as well as Leon Fleisher , György Sebök, György Kurtág , Sándor Zöldy (Végh Quartet), Samuel Rhodes ( Juilliard String Quartet ) and Henry Mayer ( LaSalle Quartet ).

The Basel String Quartet's own concert series is an integral part of cultural life in Basel and Zurich. The thematic programs, also in interdisciplinary collaboration with directors, actors, visual artists, dancers and writers (including Franz Hohler , Urs Widmer , Peter Schweiger and Matthias Schuppli), have given many listeners new access to works and “soundscapes”.

Awards and concert activities

In 1998 the Basler Streichquartett won the Basler Orchestergesellschaft competition and in 1999 the International Max Reger Quartet Competition in Weimar. In 2000 he was awarded the advancement award of the canton of Basel-Landschaft.

In the same year the first CD with works by Haydn, Beethoven, Wolf and Kurtág was released by amphion records. The Basel String Quartet played at international festivals in Paris, Jerusalem and Schleswig-Holstein, where its concerts were enthusiastically received by the public and the press. Invitations to the International Music Month Basel, the Davos Festival, from the IGNM Basel and the IGNM Bern followed. There was a lecture recital with Walter Levin for the Schönberg exhibition in the Schirn in Frankfurt . In 2006 the Basel String Quartet made its debut in the Tonhalle Zurich .

From 2007 to 2010 the highlights were a tour of Romania, concerts at the Veress Festival Bern, the Schubertiade of Espace 2 and the composition workshop at the Musikdorf Ernen Festival. In October 2012 the two string quartets were recorded by Sándor Veress. His concert for string quartet and symphony orchestra will be recorded in January 2013 with the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra under Jan Schultz. The CD was released in 2013 by Toccata Classics (London).

World premieres

In recent years, quartets by Charles Koechlin (Freiburg / Albert concerts), Daniel Glaus , Daniel Biro, Gustav Friedrichson, Mathias Ruegg, Chris Weinheimer (collaboration with Saarländischer Rundfunk) and Martin Derungs have premiered. In 2009 the world premiere of the work Zweiung by Roland Moser, dedicated to the Basler String Quartet, followed . In 2012 the quartet commissioned Cécile Marti to compose. Her work Trapez , created in this context, was premiered by the Basel String Quartet in Zurich in October of the same year.

Susanne Mathé - violin

Lessons with Françoise Zöldy-Pfister, studies and soloist diploma with distinction with Thomas Füri (Basel), studies in the master class of Viktor Liberman (Utrecht), further studies with Sándor Végh (Salzburg) and Loránd Fenyves (Toronto). Isabelle Ladewig - violin

Prize winner of various competitions. Studied in the USA at the Oberlin Conservatory (Cleveland) with Professor A. Vamos, then in Toronto with Professor Lorand Fenyves. Concert diploma with distinction at the Musikhochschule Basel with Thomas Füri. Master courses in Jerusalem, Banff, Prussia Cove, Orford, Bad Sobernheim and Tours. 1998 to 2011 member and part-time leader of the Basel Chamber Orchestra. Concert activity in various European countries, in America and Japan. Solo appearances with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the Szeged Symphony Orchestra and the Hungarian Radio Orchestra. In 2004 she founded the Ensemble Volnay together with her husband Jan Schultsz. As a violin teacher at the Binningen Music School since 2002 and at the Basel Music Academy since 2007.

Stella Mahrenholz - viola

Comes from a family of musicians. Studied in Manchester, London and Lucerne with Karen Opgenorth and baroque viola with Brian Dean. 2006 concert diploma with distinction. Laureate of the Cecil Aronowitz Viola Prize and the John Barbirolli String Quartet Prize. 2001 to 2004 member of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then she has been a newcomer to the Zurich Opera House , the Zurich Chamber Orchestra , the Basel Symphony Orchestra and the Basel Chamber Orchestra. Stéphanie Meyer - violoncello

Born in Montreal. In 2003 she completed her studies with Thomas Demenga with a soloist diploma , then studied baroque cello at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Christophe Coin.
