The 10 km long and up to 2 km wide fjord begins in the south-west near the village of Batnfjordsøra, the administrative center of Gjemnes municipality, where the Batnfjordelva flows into, and runs from there in a north-easterly direction to immediately south of the island of Bergsøy . There it merges into the only short Bergsoyfjord, which continues northeast to the Tingvollfjord , while to the north the Gjemnessund, spanned by the Gjemnessund Bridge , branches off to the Kvernesfjord .

At Øre, the Skeisdakselva, coming from the south, flows into the fjord, opposite the Blakstadelva.

Settlements, Transport and Tourism

Both banks of the fjord and the Batnfjordelva valley are inhabited; In addition to Batnfjordsøra, there are also the settlements Gjemnes in the north and Øre in the south on the Batnfjord.

On the north bank of the fjord, the European route 39 runs from Molde to Trondheim . Immediately after crossing the Gjemnessund Bridge on the island of Bergsøy, the Rv 70 branches off from here with the Freifjord tunnel to Kristiansund in the north. Road Fv 666 leads along the south bank of the fjord from Batnfjordsøra via Øre to Torvikbukt on Bergsoyfjord and from there further east and finally southeast along the west bank of Tingvollfjord and its southern continuation Sunndalsfjord .

The fjord is a popular summer destination. There is a hotel in Batnfjordsøra, and there are numerous cabins for rent on the banks of the fjord. Fishing tourism is widespread; a common fish in the Batnfjord is the tusk .
