The Tingvollfjord is a fjord in the Fylke Møre og Romsdal in western Norway . It is located south of Kristiansund in the area of the municipalities of Gjemnes , Molde , Tingvoll and Sunndal , and the municipal boundaries partly run along or cross the middle of the fjord.

geography

The fjord, which cuts deep into mainland Norway, begins in the north south of the two islands Bergsøy and Aspøy , where it merges into Bergsøysund , which runs north, and Bergsoyfjord , which runs west. The Bergsoyfjord connects it to the west with the Batnfjord and west of the island Bergsøy to the north over the Gjemnessund spanned by the 1257 m long Gjemnessundbrua with the Kvernesfjord . The Bergsøysund between Bergsøy and Aspøy, crossed by Bergsøysundbrua , a 931 m long floating bridge, connects the Tingvollfjord to the north with the Freifjord . At the east end of Aspøy, the 400 m long E 39 bridge over Langsetvågen connects the island with the mainland and marks the north end of the Tingvollfjord there.

The actual Tingvollfjord extends from there over a length of approx. 35 kilometers to the south-southeast to the headland Ballsnes, where its southern continuation, the 17 km long Sunndalsfjord , begins and where the municipal boundary between Sunndal in the south and Molde and Tingvoll in the north-west or respectively Crossed the fjord northeast. The Sunndalsfjord ends at Sunndalsøra , where the Driva joins the fjord.

Apart from a few narrow passages, the fjord is usually around 3 km wide. Southeast of the Kvalvågholmen lighthouse in the north, it has its greatest depth of 365 m.

In addition to some rocky archipelago, there are only three noteworthy, but small and only occasionally inhabited islands in the fjord: Langoy in the north in front of the entrance to Langsetvågen, Meloy not far northeast of the Ballsnes headland, and Flåoy in Sunndalsfjord.

Settlements and Transport

There are numerous, mostly small, villages along the banks of Tingvollfjord and Sunndalsfjord. On the western bank are Hoem, Flemma, Angvika, Raudsand, Eidsøra, Jordalsgrenda and Øksendal. On the east bank are Øygarden, Kjervika, Eikrem, Tveekra, Gyl, Sandvikas, Bergem, Tingvoll and Oppdøl. At the southern end of the fjord is Sunndalsøra, a town of more than 4,000 people, around 900 of whom work in the local aluminum factory run by Norsk Hydro .

On the north bank of the fjord on the islands Bergsøy and Aspøy and the Langsetvågen bridge, the European route 39 runs from Molde to Trondheim . On this section, the E 39 is identical to the RV 70, which joins the E 39 from Kristiansund in the north through the Freifjord tunnel on Bergsøy and then branches off again after crossing the Langsetvågen bridge and goes on the east bank of the fjord to Tingvoll. There it leaves the fjord bank and only returns to Sunndalsfjord about 40 km further south just before Sunndalsøra after passing through the 7430 m long Oppdølstrandt tunnel .

Fv 666 runs along the west bank in the north , and Fv62 further south.
