Aspøy ( Norwegian Aspøya ) is an island south of Kristiansund in the Norwegian Fylke Møre og Romsdal . Until 1905 Aspøy was a peninsula , connected in the northeast by the approximately 150 m wide isthmus Nålsundeid with the Straumsnes peninsula; it was only the 8 m wide canal dug through the isthmus for fishing boats and other small ships that made Aspøy an island. Administratively, Aspøy is part of the municipality of Tingvoll .

The 20 km 2 large, 7 km long and up to 4 km wide island surrounded by Freifjord in the north, the Bergsøysund the west, deep into the Norwegian mainland drastic Tingvoll Fjord in the south and the Nålsund, the Karihavet and Langsetvågen the east .

The highest point is the summit of Vettafjell in the southern part of the island at 372 m; in the north are Nipa (359 m) and Sallaupkamman (348 m). All three peaks are above the tree line .

Settlements and Transport

The 343 inhabitants registered in 2015 are spread over a number of small settlements on the narrow coastal strip. These settlements are connected by the road Fv 296, which runs around the island in the east, north and west , and in the south by Europastraße 39 / Rv 70. The R 39 / Route 70 reaches Aspøy in the southwest on the island Bergsøy leading via the Bergsøysund Bergsøysund Bridge , a 931 m long and Krifast belonging system floating bridge , and connects the island in the southeast over a 400 m long bridge over the Langsetvågen with the Straumsnes Peninsula and mainland Norway . In the northeast, Aspøy is connected to the mainland by a municipal road that crosses the Nålsund Canal from 1905.
