Battlefield, Missouri is a small town in Green County , Missouri , United States . The place got its name from the Battle of Wilson's Creek in 1861, one of the first major battles of the American Civil War .

location

Battlefield is located about 11 km southwest of Springfield , with 160,000 inhabitants the upper center of the area, in the middle of the Ozark Plateau , a gently rolling plateau west of the Mississippi or south of the Missouri .

history

In 1861 the Battle of Wilson's Creek took place at Battlefield between Union forces and the Missouri State Guard. Union Captain Nathaniel Lyon had marched along the Missouri to take Jefferson City , the capital of the state of Missouri. With his unit, now increased to 12,000 men, he attacked the Confederate Missouri Army on August 10. After initial superiority, the battle was lost and Lyon was killed. One had to withdraw. In total, over 2500 soldiers died in the fighting.

On May 4, 2003, parts of the city were destroyed by several tornadoes. Seven people were killed, 48 were injured and dozen lost their homes.

Memory of the battle

Several streets, parks and other landmarks in the place were named after events or people from this war, such as Z. Nathaniel Lyon Street , one of the main thoroughfares of the city.

Today the battlefield is in almost the same condition as it was in wartime 1861. Right next to the battlefield is the Wilson Creek Civil War Museum with an extensive collection of artifacts from the Civil War west of the Mississippi.
