Peasant War is a documentary film from 1998 by Swiss director Erich Langjahr .
content
After the Sennen Ballad , this is the second film in a farmer trilogy in which Erich Langjahr deals with the threatened existence of the farmer at the end of the 20th century , in the age of mass production . The film focuses on the survival of agriculture in a time of transition from a state-controlled planned economy to a market economy . It is the time of the explosive liberalization of world trade in goods. Despite protests from many farmers, the new GATT treaties were signed by the Swiss Federal Council and approved by parliament . Switzerland thus became a member of the World Trade Organization WTO in 1995 .
In order to survive in this new market situation, most farmers rely on technical progress and high breeding. But many companies cannot keep up, give up and the farms are auctioned off. In many respects, the Peasant War with its apocalyptic visions of the fully technical agro-industry is the counterpart to the “original”, almost idyllic image of the Sennen Ballad . The shocking images from a meat and bone meal factory create the uncanny impression that the unworthy recycling of leftovers is a fate that affects both animals and humans.
