Baumgarten Bridge (Vienna)
The Baumgartenbrücke , named after the Baumgarten part of the 14th district, is a bridge over the Wien River . It connects the Viennese districts Hietzing (13th, St.-Veit-Gasse, Hietzinger Kai) and Penzing (14th, Zehetnergasse, Hadikgasse) and is one of the oldest existing bridges in Vienna and the last parallel framework by Otto Wagner in the outer Wiental. Today the bridge is only passable northwards, towards the 14th district.
The bridge stood in the vicinity of Karlsplatz in the 1870s . On the occasion of the vaulting of the Vienna River , the eight-span supporting structure was dismantled there, shortened by one field and rebuilt at the current location in 1898. Another supporting structure over the city railway , which was built at the time and parallel to the river , today the U4 , was added on the Hietzingen side. This is where today's Unter St. Veit underground station has been located .
The quay wall of the Wien River on the right in the direction of flow has been the border between the 13th and 14th district since 1938. Until then, Baumgarten had also belonged to the 13th district. War damage was only partially repaired in the 1940s; until the end of the 1980s the bridge had a load capacity of only 14 tons. The St. Veit Bridge further out of town was similar, but was rebuilt in 1987 as a diversion for the western exit construction site.
As a result, an efficient one-way system (St. Veit Bridge towards 13th and Baumgarten Bridge towards 14th district) was planned for traffic organization in western Vienna. The Baumgarten Bridge was therefore to be converted so that it was suitable for bridge class I (highest load class). That was a challenge with an eccentric riveted framework made of non-weldable steel. By skeletonizing the construction, only the two truss girders and some girders under the carriageway level remained.
The subsequent installation of a modern supporting structure between the trusses and new sidewalks on both sides of the bridge carriageway resulted in a bridge which, while maintaining the appearance and monument protection, should continue to meet all traffic requirements for decades.
