Type : Pseudevernia furfuracea
Scientific name
Pseudevernia furfuracea
( L. ) Braid

Pseudevernia furfuracea , also called tree moss , bran, shrub or elk antler lichen ,contrary to its misleading name, is not moss , but a lichen thatgrows shrubby on trees . It is the only species of this genus in Europe. Thespecific epithet comes from the Latin word furfuraceus = bran-shaped.

description

The shape of the tree moss can be shrubby, bearded or almost leafy. The bands of this lichen are gray or blue-gray. They are covered on the top with coral-like pins ( isidia ). The underside is white or pink when young, bluish or black with age. Apothecia are seldom developed. The spores are unicellular, ellipsoid. Your photobionts are green algae of the species Trebouxia simplex .

Location and distribution

This species is found worldwide in cool, temperate, and subtropical climates. In Europe it occurs from the mountains of southern Europe to central Scandinavia. It grows on the bark of conifers and on deciduous trees with acidic bark (especially on birch ), more rarely on silicate rock . In spruce forests in Central Europe, it often dominates together with bladder lichen ( Hypogymnia physodes ).

Systematics

The tree moss forms two different chemical races:

  • Pseudevernia furfuracea var. Ceratea contains olivetoric acid . The pith of the lichen turns red with sodium hypochlorite .
  • Pseudevernia furfuracea var. Furfuracea contains physodic acid . There is no reaction with sodium hypochlorite.

particularities

Like oak moss ( Evernia prunastri ), tree moss is used in the perfume industry as a “mousse des arbres”. It is considered to be highly allergenic.
