The nursery grove in Bonn district of West Town is a 1.4 hectare large city park . Together with the one reported here Electoral gardener's house is the park as a site of the former electoral nursery under monument protection .

history

In the 18th century under the Cologne electors , a spacious, baroque ensemble of parks and avenues was laid out around the Poppelsdorf Palace . The grounds created at that time include the Hofgarten , the Bonn City Garden, the Poppelsdorfer Allee , the Nussallee, the Baumschulallee, the Botanical Garden and also the Baumschulwäldchen .

Around 1720, under Elector Joseph Clemens of Bavaria, the tree nursery was created at the confluence of the Endeicher and Poppelsdorfer Bach rivers . At that time the wooded park was to the west of the city walls, surrounded by fields. The facility covered an area of almost two hectares. Trees were grown here for the electoral gardens and avenues. The last elector of Cologne, Maximilian Franz of Austria , often stayed in the complex he valued and had a small "pleasure house" built here, today's electoral gardener's house . A gardener's apartment and stables, which are no longer preserved, were also built in the direction of Endeicher Strasse . On a map by Jean Joseph Tranchot from the beginning of the 19th century, the paths of the complex still show straight, symmetrical structures: a central path is crossed at right angles by four cross paths.

In the late 18th century, the area was reduced in size in connection with city expansion and road construction. In 1846 a gymnasium was built and in 1881 a riding arena was built on what was previously a park. In 1905 a further part was assigned to the city for the construction of the Wittelsbacherring (extension of the tree school avenue ). In 1908, the city took over the horticultural care from the Bonn University, which was responsible until then . The remaining park that is preserved today has winding paths and meadows. In addition to a playground, the park has two memorials to fallen soldiers from Bonn in the two world wars and a sweet chestnut that is classified as a natural monument and is estimated to be 120 years old.

Controversial redesign

From the end of 2017 until the summer of 2018, the facility was redesigned on the basis of a nationwide tender. In February 2015, the selection was made for a project led by Rainer Sachse (* 1968). The park was then divided into two zones, a natural and a botanical forest. A “promenade around the park” and straight paths that follow the original design should be laid out. From January 2016, there were protests by residents at the district administration about the planned changes. It was decided to involve the citizens in the planning of the € 280,000 redesign of the park. As a result of the public participation, the straightening of the roads was rejected again. In January 2018, around 50 trees were felled, which led to renewed protests by some of the residents. After the redesign was completed, the tree nursery was very well received by young parents from Bonn's west town and their children.
