The Melbbach, also Engelbach, Engelsbach or Poppelsdorfer Bach, is a brook in Bonn . Its total length is 6.1 kilometers and its catchment area is 5.02 square kilometers.

etymology

The name "Melb-" is interpreted as being of Celtic origin and should mean clay , the name Engelsbach is derived from a former monastery.

course

The source of the stream is in the Waldau area . Initially, the brook runs open for 3.1 km through the natural Melbe valley . Here it is crossed by the Melbbrücke . The Melbbad is now located on the site of a former mill. In Poppelsdorf the brook then runs underground (approx. 1.5 km) until it flows into the pond of the Bonn Botanical Garden at Poppelsdorf Castle ( Melbweiher , also Poppelsdorf pond ), which once served as a moat for the Gothic predecessor castle and the garden until two of its arms were filled in at the end of the 19th century.

Parts of the water flow from the pond underground to the Rhine ; in 1991 a new, larger canal was built for this purpose to prevent flooding in Poppelsdorf as in 1970.
