history

The Kingdom of Bavaria recognized the importance of a functioning transport infrastructure early on. Ports were built at the most important interfaces between the modes of transport. Even before the First World War , the Bavarian ports in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ( previously Bavarian ), Regensburg, Passau and Aschaffenburg , which were highly regarded at the time because of their size, were established .

The port authorities in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Aschaffenburg, Regensburg and Passau were established by the ordinance of August 27, 1925. Together they formed the “Landeshafenverwaltung” in the state building administration, which in turn was subordinate to the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior . In 1931 the Passau Port Authority was dissolved and the business tasks assigned to the Regensburg Port Authority.

After the Second World War , Bavaria and its parts of the state on the left bank of the Rhine also lost the ports of Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Speyer and Maximiliansau (Wörth am Rhein). The port authorities of Regensburg and Aschaffenburg with the associated ports remained in the home countries . In 1958 a new Bavarian state port was built in Bamberg. The inauguration of the port took place on September 25, 1962, at the same time the completion of the Main expansion was celebrated. A paradigm shift took place on April 1, 1953. The until then as individual farms cameralistic managed port authorities were combined into a commercially run business operation. The youngest Bavarian port in Nuremberg was opened on August 11, 1972, and the Main-Danube Canal to Nuremberg was completed at the same time . The operation of the port of Nuremberg was transferred to the then newly founded Hafen Nürnberg-Roth GmbH on January 1, 1995 .

On June 1, 2005, the Bavarian State Harbor Administration was converted into the legal form of GmbH & Co. KG following a cabinet decision in 2004.
