The Bavarian Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired (BBSB) is a non-profit association based in Munich . As of December 31, 2018, the association had 7,962 members. It was founded in 1920 under the name Bayerischer Blindenbund . The association sees itself as a self-help organization and advocacy in Bavaria living blind and visually impaired , deafblind and hörsehbehinderten people and of people living in Bavaria, whose disease can cause blindness or visual impairment. 520 people are currently working for the association in full or honorary positions (as of 2017).

Services and offers

Advice and meeting centers

To perform regional tasks, the BBSB is divided into ten legally not independent district groups (from north to south):

  • Aschaffenburg: Lower Franconia-Aschaffenburg-Miltenberg district group
  • Würzburg: District group Lower Franconia-Würzburg
  • Bamberg: District group Upper Franconia
  • Nuremberg: District group Middle Franconia
  • Regensburg: District group Upper Palatinate
  • Augsburg: District group Swabia-Augsburg
  • Kempten: Allgäu district group
  • Munich: District group Upper Bavaria-Munich
  • Rosenheim: District group Upper Bavaria-Rosenheim
  • Plattling: District group Lower Bavaria

The district groups maintain advice centers (or advice and meeting centers, BBZ). In addition to advising the members, there are social and aid advice and regular events on self-help-specific topics and they serve as a meeting point for the members to exchange experiences.

The regional office of the BBSB is in Munich.

Voluntary counselors for the blind and visually impaired

The BBSB trains blind and visually impaired people to become voluntary supporters through an internal qualification and further training measure. As trained counselors, they contact those affected and offer personal counseling sessions in the BBZs or at home.

rehabilitation

The rehabilitation service (rehab service) is an intermediary service of the association in which members are referred to qualified and trained, external rehabilitation trainers (rehab trainers) with an additional qualification as low-vision trainers. These offer instruction and support in the areas of orientation and mobility (e.g. walking independently with a long stick ), practical life skills (e.g. recognizing coins and banknotes) or handling (technical) aids (e.g. handling with visual aids ).

Legal advice and representation

The BBSB provides advice and assistance in legal matters within its statutory scope and within the framework of what is legally permissible. In the social departments, those affected receive advice on social law issues and support in claiming statutory and other social benefits. Social benefits can e.g. B. an application for a statutory compensation for disadvantages ( blindness allowance ) or applications for benefits from statutory health and nursing care insurance (assumption of costs for an aid).

Aid advice

In Nuremberg, the Aids Advice North of the Middle Franconia district group and in Munich the Aids Advice South of the Upper Bavaria-Munich district group has their respective headquarters. Those seeking advice receive individual advice and can test many of the (technical) aids and visual aids, such as DAISY players , PCs incl Magnification or screen reader software, screen readers and speaking or tactile household helpers and devices.

Eye focus

"Eye focus - advice and help with vision loss" (BPA) is an offer from the German Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (DBSV). The consultants are mainly affected by an eye disease themselves. You will be in contact with specialists in ophthalmology, optics, rehabilitation, psychology, education and geriatric sciences. The offer is aimed exclusively at people with diminishing eyesight. The aim is to offer those affected, their relatives and caregivers advice and help on all questions related to an eye disease. As the regional association of the DBSV, the BBSB implements the Blickpunkt Auge project in Bavaria. In order to be able to offer advice and support on site, regional contact points are gradually being set up and expanded. In Bavaria, the BBSB currently offers the following focus eye counseling services:

  • Advice centers in the BBZ Nuremberg, BBZ Munich, BBZ Rosenheim, BBZ Regensburg, BBZ Augsburg, BBZ Würzburg
  • Advice phones in the BBZ Plattling and Augsburg

BIT center

The Advice, Information and Text Service Center (BIT) is a non-profit, legally not independent institution of the BBSB, which converts texts and drawings into barrier-free, blind and visually impaired formats. The BIT Center currently offers over 1,500 publications in braille , large print or audio books for sale. The individual text service of the BIT center implements individual customer requests in Braille , large print, digital form or as an audio book. The BIT Teleservice can be reached under a Munich landline number. Interested parties can use this telephone number to have the current video texts from ARD, ZDF or BR read aloud. The BIT Center also includes Aid Advice North and Aid Advice South.

Special topics are dealt with in lectures held on a voluntary basis within the BBSB. The speakers themselves are blind or visually impaired. There are currently presentations for the following areas:

Memberships and cooperations

The BBSB is a full member of the umbrella organization for German self-help for the blind and visually impaired, the German Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (DBSV e.V.). He is also a member of the State Working Group on Self-Help Bavaria (LAG Self-Help Bavaria) and the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband Bayern. The BBSB is the sole shareholder of the AURA-HOTEL Kur- und Treffenzentrum Saulgrub gGmbH. Among other things, the association is involved in co-sponsorship:

  • Würzburg Vocational Promotion Agency in Veitshöchheim, education center for the blind and visually impaired
  • Nuremberg living quarters and workshops for the blind and visually impaired (NWW) based in Nuremberg
