history

The reason for the construction of the "Bayern Tower" was the intention of the communities of Zimmerau and Sternberg to bring visitors to the border area in northern Bavaria. The Bavarian state government supported the tower financially. The inauguration date was June 17th, the annual celebrated day of German unity , in 1966. In 1972, a holiday home area was created below the tower.

Since the tower was right on the border, visitors came from all over the world to take a look at the GDR over its border systems and the death strip.

Even after the German division was overcome and the border installations were dismantled, the Bayern Tower has remained a popular destination. When the weather permits, it offers a comprehensive all-round view of the Haßberge and Grabfeld to the Rhön , the Heldburger Land and the Gleichbergen , the Thuringian Forest and the Fichtelgebirge .
