occupation

Be (er) a Hero is a German short film by Johanna Herrmann from the year 2019. This was with a team of students of the Faculty of Audiovisual Media of the Media University . Using the example of the fictional brand Hero Ale , Be (er) a Hero plays with the aesthetics of beer advertising and deals with the topic of everyday heroes.

action

The nameless protagonist is sitting on the platform of an S-Bahn station. While he is reading a comic, he is repeatedly distracted by the advertisement for the Hero Ale beer brand on a monitor . In one spot, bar visitors are desperate when the bartender runs out of beer. When he finally operates a red button, an oversized barrel emerges from the floor, from which a monk steps out and supplies the guests with fresh beer. The main actor at the station now directs his full attention to the screen. Another commercial begins in which four people a few centimeters tall try to drink from a normal-sized beer glass in a bar. After several attempts fail, the S-Bahn arrives. Animated by the superhero comic and the commercial, the protagonist takes off his hoodie and rushes to the rescue. Dressed in the style of a classic superhero, he flies through the clouds and finally enters the bar from the spot. With the help of his superpower, he transforms the beer glass into several small glasses from which the miniature people can drink. The short film ends with the advertising slogan: " Hero Ale - Everyone Can Be A Hero ".

background

The production team for Be (er) a Hero was formed in March 2018 under the direction of Professor Katja Schmid. The basic idea was to shoot an entertaining advertisement for a fictional beer. Cinematographer Phil Aznar later explained the finished concept: “ Advertising and reality merge into a unique taste experience that is entertaining and should give the viewer one thing on the way: whether beer fan or not - generosity can make each of us heroes. “A budget of € 3,200 was available for the project.

In the 2018/2019 winter semester, the short film was made as part of the Audiovisual Media course at the Media University. The shooting lasted five days and took place in the film studio of the University of Applied Sciences, a VFX studio equipped with a green screen and a station on the Stuttgart S-Bahn . Post-production followed the shoot. The visual effects created by a team of ten around Inga Wätjen proved to be time-consuming. The production took a total of ten months.
