Beaufort West is a municipality in the Central Karoo District , Western Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011, 49,586 inhabitants lived on a total area of ​​16,330 km². The seat of the municipal administration is Beaufort West. Mayor is Japie van der Linde.

The parish was founded in 1818 and named after Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort Beaufort . Somerset was the father of Lord Charles Henry Somerset , the governor of the Cape Colony .
