The couple Bill and Kate live in an American suburb. Their apparent happiness is only a facade, the relationship is in crisis and the separation is imminent. Then the couple received terrible news: a rampage had taken place at their son Sam's university. A little later, the police are at the door and the family learns that Sam murdered 17 people and then committed suicide. Pressed by the media, Bill and Kate unceremoniously move in with Kate's brother Eric and his wife Trish. They try to understand why Sam could commit such an act - but cannot find an answer. Both realize that all they have left is themselves - bound by sadness, bewilderment and their son's legacy. All of these life-changing circumstances cause the couple to face their feelings of anger, guilt, and self-awareness so that they ultimately see the chance for themselves to be happy again.
