Rebecca "Becky" Marie Chambers (* 1985 in California ) is an American science fiction - writer . She received the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2016 and 2017 and the Hugo Award in 2019 for her Wayfarer trilogy.

Life

Becky Chambers was born the daughter of an astrobiologist and an aerospace engineer .

Among other things, she worked in the administration of a theater and between 2010 and 2014 as a freelance editor for magazines such as The Mary Sue or Tor.com , and she lived in Scotland and Iceland . She currently lives with her wife in her native California and works as a technical writer .

She financed her debut novel The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet in 2012 via the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.com and initially self-published it in 2014 . The novel was published on August 13, 2015 by the publishers Hodder & Stoughton (in Great Britain ) and Harper Voyager (in the USA) and received the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2016 . It was published in German in October 2016 under the title The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Fischer Tor . The second part of this Wayfarer series, set in a fictional universe , was published under the title A Closed And Common Orbit in October 2016 in Great Britain and in January 2018 in German as Zwischen Zwei Sternen (Fischer Tor). He received the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2017.

On July 24, 2018 Record of a Spaceborn Few was released , 2019 in German Unter uns die Nacht . It was nominated for the Hugo Award 2019 as the best SF or fantasy novel in the "Novel" category. The Wayfarer trilogy received the Hugo Award 2019 in the "Best Series" category.
