Bedellia is the only genus of the Bedelliidae butterfly family within the superfamily Yponomeutoidea . The genus is currently assigned 18 species, three of which occur in Europe. The group is distributed worldwide, with the exception of the Neotropics . The type Bedellia somnulentella can as a pest of morning glories ( Ipomoea occur).

features

The moths are small and greyish in color. Your head at the vertex is provided with hair- shaped (piliform) scales , the face is smoothly scaled. Point eyes ( Ocelli ) and Jordanian organs ( Chaetosemata ) are missing. The scales on the scapus form a dense ridge, but no cap is formed over the eyes. The rails ( tibia ) of the hind legs are dorsally hairy.

The following features belong to the possible autapomorphies of the group: The wing veins Rs2, Rs3, Rs3 and? M1 + M2 arise from a common trunk, which arises at the pointed tip of the disc cell and in the males the pleural lobe is missing on the eighth segment. The unborn abdomen in the adults and the abdominal bones on the third and sixth segment, which are shortened in relation to the two middle pairs of abdominal legs , could be further autapomorphies of the group.

The caterpillars have a long spinning gland and , as in the Heliodinidae family, Seta VI is undeveloped on the thorax . What they have in common with the caterpillars of the Lyonetiidae family is that the epipharynx is noticeably fringed. They also only have two lateral sets on the first to seventh abdominal segment. The doll has a conical extension on the fron. These two features also appear convergent in other groups of the Yponomeutoidea .

Way of life

The caterpillars are leaf miners and feed on various plant families such as sweet grasses (Poaceae), lily plants (Liliaceae), nettle plants (Urticaceae) and bindweed plants (Convolvulaceae). The mines initially consist of a narrow feeding passage, later a stain on the leaf is eroded and even several mines are created and the leaf can also be changed. The nail is ejected from the mine. Outside the mines, an open silk web is spun on the leaf. Pupation takes place in a loose web below or above the mine. No actual cocoon is spun.

Systematics

The genus of the monotypic family was originally included in the Lyonetiidae family . However, the family relationships of the group are still unclear.
