Bedri Baykam (born April 26, 1957 in Ankara ) is a Turkish artist and writer. Occasionally he works as an actor.

Life

Baykam was born in 1957 as the son of the Turkish politician and CHP MP Suphi Baykam and the architect Mutahhar Baykam. Baykam himself tells in his autobiography that he started painting at the age of two and had exhibitions in Europe as a child. He was considered a “child prodigy”, but there is no evidence for this. Baykam passed his matriculation examination at Özel Saint-Joseph Fransız Lisesi .

Baykam studied from 1975 to 1980 at the Sorbonne in Paris and graduated with a Master of Business Administration . At the same time he studied acting at L'Actorat in Paris. From 1980 to 1987 he lived in California and studied painting and film production at the California College of Arts in Oakland . He had exhibitions in New York, California and Paris. In 1987 he returned to Turkey and has lived in Istanbul ever since.

In addition to his work as an artist, Baykam has published 18 books so far (as of spring 2020), five of them on art and 11 on politics. Some of the better-known works include Monkeys' Right to Paint , which has been published in Turkish and English. Baykam sheds light on the plight of non-Western artists and criticizes the Western focus of recent art history. Baykam also wrote the novel Kemik , which was published in December 2000. In 2005 the novel, which spanned a century, was also published in English under the title The Bone .

2011 Baykam participated in the protest against the demolition of the " Menscheitsdenkmal " in Kars part, which campaigned for reconciliation between Turks and Armenians. Baykam and his assistant were seriously injured by a knife.

Baykam made several short films and was involved as an actor in Turkish films. Baykam is the founder of a film production company and publishing company in Istanbul.

Baykam works for the Kemalist association Ataturkçü Düşünce Derneği . He is also one of the founders of the Turkish Committee of the International Association of Art and was Chairman of the IAA from 2015 to 2019. He has been a member of Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) since 1995 . Between 1995 and 1998 he was an elected member of the party's party council. Baykam also ran for chairmanship of the party at the general assembly in Ankara in October 2003. He is an outspoken supporter of Kemalism .

Baykam founded the monthly art magazine Skala in 2000, which was published until 2002. He writes for Cumhuriyet and for art and political magazines for the Turkish left.

Baykam has been married to the journalist Sibel (Yağcı) Baykam since May 1997. The couple has a son.
