information The PAL and NTSC versions have New Beetles. The AUS version is called HSV Adventure Racing and has HSV cars instead of New Beetles.

Beetle Adventure Racing is a racing game for the Nintendo 64 released in 1999 . It was jointly developed by Paradigm Entertainment and Electronic Arts and published by Electronic Arts.

Although the game already includes the new Volkswagen New Beetles , many features such as the music and level content can be traced back to the 1970s.

Paradigm obtained the license to use the New Beetles, similar to the film Jurassic Park II and the Mercedes-Benz M, from the fact that the New Beetle had just been released and thus appeared as the ideal advertising space in the game.

Although the vehicles look like New Beetles, they are rather cumbersome to steer and in some places action-heavy.

stretch

There are six different tracks in Beetle Adventure Racing. Each one is very large for an N64 racing game and lasts three rounds (six minutes). The tracks offer a destructible environment here and there. In each race, the player first drives a short path to reach the track. After the third round, the player is also forced onto a path with a barrier in order to drive to the finish.

The routes are fictional or based on real environments.

Coventry Cove

The easiest route in the game. You drive through a hot air balloon competition, over a huge cliff waterfall, through an old village, ship docks, over sidings, Stonehenge , mining mines and through a destroyed castle and monastery .

Mount Mayhem

  • Difficulty level: easy
  • Location: Alps
  • Available: Yes

An easy route with lots of shortcuts. You drive through a small village, a crystal cave and many winding hilly landscapes. There is also a skiable ski jump .

Inferno Isle

  • Difficulty level: medium
  • Location: Adventure Island
  • Available: Free Spins by Mastery Level Beginner

A more demanding route. The route starts at a beach, leads through a Jurassic Park enclosure where a T-Rex is waiting to catch a Beetle, leads through a densely populated village by the sea, through a volcano, to a burning village .

Sunset Sands

  • Difficulty level: medium
  • Location: oasis / desert
  • Available: Free Spins by Mastery Level Advanced

A winding route. If you lose your way, it is easy to lose your bearings. Most of the route leads through a desert. In addition, one drives through numerous temples, a huge pyramid, a city in the desert and an oasis.

Metro Madness

  • Difficulty level: difficult
  • Location: City, fictional replica of Las Vegas
  • Available: Free spins by Mastery Level Professional

This route is very winding. Starting on a motorway you drive through the city. In the city, the route goes through an entertainment district, a canal and an industrial area. The numerous shortcuts such as a cinema, an elevated railway line, a casino and a hotel give many opportunities to get a good place. The route ends in the train station in the industrial area.

Wicked Woods

  • Difficulty level: difficult
  • Location: Mysterious Forest
  • Available: Free Spins on Mastery Level Bonus

Driving is mainly in a dark forest. During the ride you will pass old windmills on a plain, a bell tower, a gloomy little village and a dragon cave full of gold. The abbreviations include a drivable ghost villa with a dungeon-like tunnel and a zone full of giant blue mushrooms and Halloween pumpkins.

HSV Adventure Racing

A modified version under the name "HSV Adventure Racing" was released a year later in Australia. Here the New Beetles were replaced by HSV cars. Paradigm did not provide any information as to why the licensing of the New Beetles was not continued here.

Multiplayer

The game can be played with up to four players.

Two players

In two-player mode, two people can drive the routes with a computer player.

Four players

With two to four players you can use the so-called "Beetle Battle" mode. Whoever is the first to find six different colored beetles in the arena and drive to the finish wins the game. However, if you crash your car or are attacked by your friends with items, you lose a bug. There are items that are scattered all over the road as boxes, such as invincibility, turbo or rocket launcher. The routes are mostly scenes from the main routes such as the underground car park from Metro Madness or the castle ruins from Coventry Cove.

  • Despite the great success and many copies sold, no successor appeared.

music

The Mount Mayhem level used excerpts from the music Last Christmas by Wham! .
