Bega is a city in southeastern New South Wales , Australia . It lies in a loop of the Bega River , into which the Brogo River flows from the left. The Princes Highway (Route 1) runs through the city , from which the Snowy Mountains Highway (Route 18) branches off to the west north of the city .
Bega has 4,141 inhabitants (as of 2016), but the catchment area - the Bega Valley Shire - is very large. This means, for example, that Bega High School is attended by around 1,000 students.
The city is known throughout Australia for its Bega Cheese .
