The Hairy ash ( Fraxinus pallisiae ) is a deciduous tree art from the genus of the ash in the family of Oleaceae . Their natural range is in Southeast Europe and Asia Minor .

description

The hairy ash is a small tree that reaches a height of 20 meters. The twigs are hairy thin and densely spaced. The terminal buds are brown and blunt. The leaves are 12 to 25 centimeters long, composed and consist of nine to 13 rarely only seven sessile or very short-stalked leaflets . The leaflets are 3 to 6 centimeters long, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, pointed with a wedge-shaped to rounded base. The leaf margin is serrated with six to twelve unequal and outwardly curved teeth. The upper side of the leaf is green, the underside rather gray-green, both sides are hairy.

The flowers are hermaphroditic and stand in small, lateral clusters . Petals are missing. The flowers appear before the leaves from April to May.

The fruits are 3.5 to 4 centimeters long, flat, winged nuts , the wing of which runs down to the lower third.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 46.

Distribution and ecology

The distribution area of ​​the hairy ash is from the Balkan Peninsula via Romania to Western Russia, Moldova, the Asian part of Turkey and the Caucasus. There it thrives in steppe trees and dry forests on moderately dry to fresh, slightly acidic to alkaline, sandy-loamy to loamy, nutrient-rich soils in sunny to light-shaded locations. It loves warmth and is frost hardy .
