The Behrendt Mountains are a group of mountains that are distributed in the shape of a horseshoe over a length of 32 km with the opening to the southwest about 11 km southwest of the Merrick Mountains in the west Antarctic Ellsworthland .
They were discovered and photographed from the air by participants in the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–1948) under the direction of the US polar explorer Finn Ronne . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them after the American seismologist John Charles Behrendt (* 1932), who worked at the Ellsworth Station in 1957, who led a reconnaissance team across the Antarctic Peninsula into the area of this mountain range in 1961/62 and in 1963 / 64 and 1965/1966 investigations in Marie-Byrd-Land and in the Pensacola Mountains .
