The Beinstein gate tower is located on the edge of the old town, directly on the Rems in the Baden-Württemberg city of Waiblingen . It is the only preserved city gate of the medieval city of Waiblingen. The building is protected as a cultural monument according to § 28 DSchG .

history

The tower was built in 1491 over a rectangular floor plan. There are four floors in the masonry area. A half-timbered floor then follows . There are two paintings from 1938 on the side facing away from the city, which depict events in the history of the city. The stone bridge on this side was built in 1735 by Johann Adam Groß .

Originally, the tower served as a city prison and from 1818 to 1864 as a senior official prison.

In 1864 the tower barely escaped demolition. The other two city gates, the Schmidener Tor and the Fellbacher Tor, were demolished in 1832 and 1838 respectively.

In the past, the tower was also called Säuturm , as pigs were driven through the gate to pasture.

Until 1934, all traffic from Schwäbisch Hall and Nuremberg to Stuttgart ran through the gate and Waiblingen's old town.

In the late 1970s, the monument was completely renovated. In 2011 the building showed serious defects. As a result, the roof and the external plaster were renovated in 2012 and 2013, and parts of the framework were replaced.

The building

The tower is 37.3 m high. The floor plan is almost square with 8.80 m × 8.60 m.

There is a small bell from 1667 in the roof turret.

use

The building is used intermittently by the homeland association of people who have been expelled from the southern Hungarian Csávoly . After several years of redesign, the exhibition in the tower was reopened in 2019.

Others

Eduard Mörike once called Waiblingen "The city with the three towers". With these towers were meant, in addition to the Beinstein gate tower, the high watchtower and the tower of Michael’s Church .
