history

The company was opened in 1932 by the businessman Otto Werner (1884–1955) and his nephew Werner Sauerwald (1910–1996) after they had acquired the building of the bankrupt Elsbach & Frank department store on Osterstrasse and the corner of Große Packhofstrasse. Similar to their predecessors, the merchants offered women's, men's and children's outerwear with an attached custom-made department.

The building was partially destroyed by the air raids on Hanover in World War II , but it was the only surviving department store complex in the city: the facade in particular remained largely undamaged and was restored in 1988.

Other department stores were less fortunate: For example, the entire Sternheim & Emanuel department store complex opposite , which Norbert Magis had leased from the city administration after the forced “Aryanization” , fell victim to the bombs . After the war, the Magis department store started over, initially in part of Otto Werner's clothing store, until the new Magis building on Kröpcke was completed in 1952.

Otto Werner fell ill in the early years of reconstruction ; from 1950 the management was in the hands of Sauerwald. He successfully expanded the company until he left: In 1985 the company had two clothing stores and three fashion stores in Hanover and other cities in Lower Saxony with a total of around 350 employees.

Towards the end of the 1990s, sales fell continuously due to increasing competition ; In 1999 the parent company in downtown Hanover was sold and in 2001 operations were finally given up. The internationally operating Spanish fashion chain Zara has been selling its clothing there since 2002 .
