Belatucadros , also Belatucadrus , Belatucairos and Balatocarus ("the beautiful and radiant"), is a Celtic deity who was worshiped as a god of war in Cumbria in the north-west of England , perhaps by the Celtic tribe of the Votadines and also by the Picts .

mythology

In the Interpretatio Romana he is equated with the god of war Mars , as evidenced by around 25 inscriptions with different spellings of the name. The majority of these inscriptions were found near Hadrian's Wall , near the Scottish border, e.g. B. at Penrith in Cumbria ( Voreda , Province of Britannia ) In some inscriptions Belatucadros is mentioned as Mars Belatucadros .

It is unclear whether the depictions of a horned god of war armed with a spear and shield in Northern Great Britain are depictions of Belatucadros or Cocidius .
