In 1902 the Belden company was founded in Chicago ( Illinois , USA ) by Joseph Belden. The first breakthrough came in 1905 when an insulation called Beldenamel was released. From 1910 the company moved into new business premises in Chicago.

In 1927, Belden was able to expand further and opened a plant in Richmond that exclusively produced electrical wire . Expansion also continued during the Second World War and with a company site of over 65,000 square meters it was the largest in 70 years of company history. Until 1942, Belden produced war products that were used in tanks, submarines, airplanes and many other products.

From 1980 Belden worked closely with Crouse-Hinds from New York , and in 1981 Cooper Industries from Texas joined the cooperation. 1993 the company headquarters was moved to St. Louis ; Belden was a separate, independent body. The German company HEW-Kabel, founded in 1964, became a member of the Corporation in 1998 .

In 2004 Belden and Cable Design Technologies merged to form the new company Belden CDT Inc. In 2007, Belden took over the German companies Hirschmann Automation and Control GmbH and Lumberg Automation Components GmbH and was renamed Belden Inc. In 2008, Belden Inc. merged the European subsidiaries to form Belden EMEA . In mid-2009, HEW-Kabel, headquartered in Wipperfürth, was sold as part of a management buy-out . In 2009 the strategic reinforcement of the broadcast division began with the acquisition of Telecast, the world's leading manufacturer of AV transmission systems over fiber optic cables .

In 2010, Belden took over the coaxial connector area from Thomas & Betts and the American company Garrett Com, manufacturer of industrial network technology, as a supplement to the German company Hirschmann, which had already been acquired. In 2011, Belden acquired the Brazilian cable manufacturer Poliron to expand its industrial cable portfolio in South America. In 2012 Belden took over the connector and tool divisions of the American manufacturers PPC and ICM, which will be combined in 2013 in Syracuse, USA, as a joint coax and connector competence center.

From 2012 onwards there was another wave of expansion in the broadcast area totaling one billion dollars, initially with the takeover of Miranda Technologies, market leader in broadcast video servers, interfaces, and much more. On April 1, 2014, the acquisition of the Franco-Canadian Grass Valley Group was completed; after leading studio equipment manufacturers such as Philips BTS and Canopus had already merged into this .
