history

The village ofopyit has its origins in the 16th century when 23 families settled directly on the right bank of the Danube. There they built a small church for themselves.

The first church was built with rods and mortar, had small windows, and was covered with reeds. As the village developed over time, it became necessary to build a larger and more modern church. This second church was built in 1731 on the hill on the Danube, at that time the village already had 230 houses. Due to the constantly changing course of the Danube, the building site for the second church became unstable over time and the church became dilapidated. Thus, in 1927, today's church - a little further away from the Danube than the second - was built and the village center was relocated with it.
