Belišće is a city in the Croatian region of Slavonia . It has 10,825 inhabitants (as of 2011), mostly Croatians, and belongs to the Osijek-Baranja County .
history
Belišće was built towards the end of the 19th century as a workers' settlement for the sawmill of the Hungarian businessman Gutmann. From 1884 onwards, an extensive wood industry with processing woodworks developed here.
After the Second World War , one of the largest cellulose / paper industries in Southeast Europe emerged in Belišće .
During the Croatian War of Independence in 1991, the city remained under Croatian control. The proximity to the Serb-occupied Baranja, however, brought the city daily grenades.
In the following years the wood industry collapsed due to unprofitability and a lack of investment. Nevertheless, the Belišće dd Group remains one of the most important employers in the region.
