The Bell Pioneer was the world's first container ship without a hatch cover .

history

The Bell Pioneer was established in May 1990 under the hull number 288 in the Teraoka Shipyard in Nandan-chō , Japan , from the stack left and finished in August 1990th The client was the Irish shipping company Bell Lines from Waterford . Although a slightly enlarged sister ship, Euro Power, and a number of other open container ships were built by other shipyards at the same shipyard in 1992 , the concept of container ships without hatch covers with front superstructures has not been fully implemented because the container capacity for ships of this size was too low. At the JJ Sietas shipyard in Hamburg-Neuenfelde , however, conventional feeder ships with aft superstructures are being built, in which the middle cargo hold has no hatch.

After the bankruptcy of the shipping company Bell Lines the ship was sold and renamed several times and has been sailing for the shipping company Mahoney Shipping since February 23, 2009. On May 20, 2014, the ship arrived in Aliağa for demolition, where it was scrapped at Ege Celik GS from May 21.

description

The ship was propelled by a Wärtsilä -Vasa diesel engine of the type 8 R32E, which operated on a controllable pitch propeller with Becker rudder. The ship was equipped with two bow thrusters .

A shaft generator and two diesel generator sets were available for the power supply . In the event of a failure of the main engine, the drive shaft could be moved with the help of the generators, thus keeping the ship maneuverable.

The deckhouse was in the forward area of the ship. In front of the deckhouse was a cargo hold closed with a folding hatch cover. There were three open holds behind the deckhouse. Here five 40-foot containers could be loaded one behind the other and five next to one another.
