Belle du Berry (* 1966 in Bourges ; bourgeois Bénédicte Grimault ; † August 11, 2020 in Le Kremlin-Bicêtre ) was a French singer , songwriter and actress .

Life

She chose her stage name after the province of Berry , in which she grew up. After studying at the film school La fémis in Paris , she began singing at Le Zèbre de Belleville with the bands Pervers Polymorphes Inorganisés , Les Endimanchés and Les Champêtres de Joie in the late 1980s .

In 1992 she worked with the choreographer Philippe Decouflé on the ballet, which was created for the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville .

From 1994 to 1995 she worked at Cabaret Sauvage and at that time met the pop and jazz trumpeter David Lewis . The two sang as a duet in various bars and cafés and met the guitarist Potzi, the bassist Mano Razanajato and the drummer François Jeannin, with whom they founded the music group Paris Combo . The lead singer recorded seven albums with the band between 1996 and 2017.

Du Berry was later discovered and promoted by Roger Planchon and Laurent Pelly , who worked with her on various projects.

She also wrote songs for Lokua Kanza and La Trabant .

Belle du Berry died at the age of 54 years to cancer .
