Bennett "Ben" Flowers (born June 15, 1927 in Goldsboro , North Carolina , † February 18, 2009 in Wilson , North Carolina) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB) on the position of pitcher . Flowers was a pitcher who mainly threw knuckleballs . His entire professional career lasted 15 years, four of which he played in the MLB.
Career
Flower's professional career began in 1945 at the age of 18 with the Roanoke Red Sox, a farm team of the Boston Red Sox , in the Piedmont League, a league of minor league baseball (MiLB). After a few years with various MiLB teams, he made his MLB debut for the Boston Red Sox on September 29, 1951 against the New York Yankees at the age of 24 . In the game, he pitched three innings and gave two runs . The game lost the Red Sox 0 to 4. That was the only MLB game that Flowers played in the 1951 season . After another year in the Pacific Coast League (PCL), Flowers played a full season for the Red Sox in the MLB in 1953. During this season he ran 32 times for the Red Sox; won one game but lost four with an Earned Run Average (ERA) of 3.86 and a shutout . Flowers pitched his shutout at Fenway Park on August 5th against the St. Louis Browns . The game won the Red Sox 5 to 0. The game lost the later World Series winner Don Larsen , who in 1953 completed his first year in the MLB.
After two more years in which he was with the Detroit Tigers , the St. Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies under contract, he played his last game in the MLB for the Philadelphia Phillies against the New York Giants on September 21, 1956 . In that game, he pitched an inning and allowed a hit . The Phillies lost the game 3 to 7.
His MLB stats total 76 games, with three wins and seven losses. He also has an ERA of 4.49 and 86 thrown strikeouts , three saves and one shutout.
