Benedict I (Gran)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Benedict (Latin Benedictus , Hungarian Benedek , probably Beneta ; † after 1055 ) was archbishop in Hungary .

Life

Some Hungarian historians believe that he could have been Bishop of Kalocsa in 1035. In 1046 a bishop Beneta was present at the violent attack on Gellért Hill near Buda , as a result of which the bishops Gerhard (Gellért), Bystrík and Buldus were killed. Beneta was the only one of the bishops to escape. His bishopric was not mentioned, it could have been Gran (Esztergom). In 1055, in the founding document of the Tihany monastery, an archbishop Benedictus was named as the first witness. Since only Gran is known as the archbishopric in Hungary at this time, he was probably archbishop there. Further mentions of his person have not been preserved.
