Benhar is a settlement in the Otago region ofthe South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located five kilometers south of Balclutha in the Clutha District . Nearby is the small lake, Lake Tuakitoto .
The place had 104 inhabitants at the 2013 census.
history
The village was established in the 1880s to house workers at the McSkimming Industries brick and pipe factory . In the 1890s the production of ceramics started. Until it closed in the 1980s, McSkimming was one of the largest sanitary ware factories in New Zealand. Many New Zealand households still have toilet bowls from this factory.
Industrial archaeologists from Otago Museum are digging on the site.
The Lesmahagow estate in Benhar was built in 1914 for the company's founder Peter McSkimming .
