history

A cook preparing the food

The company was founded in 1964 on West 56th Street in New York City by Hiroaki Aoki . His first restaurant, the Benihana of Tokyo , was named after the red saffron , one of his parents' coffee shops in Tokyo .

Aoki's concept, in which the guests can watch the cook preparing and artistic serving of the dishes at a teppanyaki , is a characteristic of Benihana. Before the New York Herald Tribune wrote a review in 1965, the Benihana was not popular and successful. With the Beatles and Muhammad Ali as guests, the restaurant gained more popularity. Aoki drove development by investing in interior design ( shoji ) so that guests could enjoy more privacy. In 1968 he opened another restaurant in Chicago .

As a consultant was Hardwicke Companies used in the 1976th After the consultant company in 1980 by the Securities and Exchange Commission for insider trading was indicted, it was dismissed as a consultant Aoki. In 1982 Benihana was a National Corporation (Nat. Corp.) with Joel Schwartz as president. Some restaurants remained in the private ownership of the founder Aoki. With the opening of the Big Splash restaurant and the attempt at Benihana National Classics (its own frozen food brand), the company had taken decisions that were damaging to its business, which led to its shareholders suing the management, including a. because some of the restaurants were still owned by Aoki instead of the Benihana Nat. Corp. to belong. In 1995 all restaurants were finally consolidated under the Benihana Incorporation (Inc.) . Benihana Inc. was able to expand with the purchase of Haru and RA sushi restaurants, which continue to operate under their names .

In 2004, Benihana Inc. split shares in BFC Financial Corporation (Financ. Corp.) to renovate and expand its restaurants. Aoki's family sued this deal. They argued that it was detrimental to business because it was not necessary, but burdensome for the company. In fact, a member of the management was also part of the management of BFC Financ. Corp. The court ruled against the charges and allowed the deal. Aoki died in 2008 at the age of 69. Richard C. Stockinger replaced Joel A. Schwartz as General Manager in 2009 before Juan C. Garcia became CEO in 2010.

In 2012, Angelo Gordon & Company bought management for $ 296 million in a takeover deal .
