Benito Legarda

Benito Legarda y Tuason (born September 27, 1853 in Manila , †  August 27, 1915 in Évian-les-Bains , France ) was a Filipino politician . Between 1907 and 1912 he represented the Philippines as a Resident Commissioner in the United States House of Representatives .

Career

Benito Legarda attended Jesuits' College and the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. He then embarked on a political career. In 1899 he became a member of the government of President Emilio Aguinaldo and Vice-President of the Revolutionary Congress of the first Philippine Republic . In 1901 he became a member of the American Commission for the Philippines ( Philippine Commission ).

In 1907 Legarda was elected by the Philippine Assembly as a non-voting delegate to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on November 22, 1907. After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1912 . In 1912 he did not stand for re-election.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he no longer appeared politically. He died on August 27, 1915 in Évian, France, and was buried in Manila.
