Pedro Guevara (born February 23, 1879 in Santa Cruz , †  January 19, 1937 in Manila ) was a Filipino politician . Between 1923 and 1936 he represented the Philippines as a Resident Commissioner in the United States House of Representatives .

Career

Pedro Guevara attended the Ateneo de Manila and graduated from the San Juan de Letran School in Manila in 1896 . He took part in the war against Spain and was involved in the negotiation of the peace treaty in 1897. He then took part in the Spanish-American War of 1898 as a lieutenant colonel in the Philippine Armed Forces . He later worked as a lawyer. In 1907 he acted as an advisor to the city of San Felipe Neri . After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. Politically, he was a member of the Nacionalista Party . Between 1909 and 1912 he sat in the House of Representatives and from 1916 to 1922 he was a member of the Senate there. In 1921 he headed the Filipino delegation to a lawyers' conference in Beijing .

In 1922, Guevara was elected by the Philippine legislature as a non-voting delegate for three years to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Jaime C. de Veyra on March 4, 1923 . After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until February 14, 1936 . On that day he was replaced by Quintín B. Paredes , who had been elected to this post after reforming the form of government in his home country. Guevara was involved in preparing this reform. He died on January 19, 1937 in Manila, where he was also buried.
