Benjamin Núñez Vargas

Benjamin Núñez Vargas (born January 24, 1915 , † September 19, 1994 in San José (Costa Rica) ) was a Costa Rican priest, founder of a Catholic trade union federation, politician and diplomat .

Life

Benjamín Núñez Vargas was the son of Mariana Vargas and Juan Núñez. He was ordained a priest on January 9, 1938. In 1940 he began studying sociology at the Universidad de Niágara , which he completed in 1941 as a Bachelor of Arts en Ciencias Sociales. In 1942 he received his doctorate from the Universidad Católica. In August 1943 he founded the Confederación Costarricense del Trabajo Rerum Novarum , an umbrella organization for around 75 Christian unions related to Catholic pastoral care in the field of banana production. In 1948 during the civil war he was field curate of José Figueres Ferrerled the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (Costa Rica) and negotiated the surrender of the Teodoro Picado Michalski government in the Mexican embassy. In the government of José Figueres Ferrer he was Minister of Labor in 1948 and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1948 to 1949. From 1954 to 1956 he was the permanent representative of the government of José Figueres Ferrer at the UN headquarters . From 1970 to 1972 he was ambassador to Jerusalem . Based in Jerusalem, he was also accredited with Nicolae Ceaușescu in Bucharest from 1971 to 1972 . In 1973 he was rector of the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica . From 1977 to 1978 he was ambassador to Jerusalem again .
