Benjamin Fischer (born October 19, 1980 in Grabs , Switzerland ) is a former Liechtenstein football player . He was most recently under contract with FC Vaduz in the Swiss Challenge League in 2011 .

Life

Benjamin Fischer is the son of soccer coach Pius Fischer . He began his career in the youth of FC Schaan and made the leap to the traditional Swiss club Grasshopper Club Zurich in 1996 via USV Eschen-Mauren . When his breakthrough in the professional squad in Zurich was denied, he moved back to Eschen-Mauren for the 1998/99 season.

He then made his breakthrough at the Swiss fourth division. With 20 goals in 28 appearances, he became the most accurate player in his team and at the end of the season celebrated his first promotion to the third Swiss level .

The 1999/2000 season saw the next step in his career at the Liechtenstein flagship club, FC Vaduz . In the next two seasons he scored 27 goals in 28 season appearances in the 3rd division for "Die Rheinwölfe" . He was also able to book two Liechtenstein Cup successes with the club.

In 2001 he moved to Switzerland again, to the ambitious Club Chur 97 . In Chur, too, he hit the ground running straight away, once again becoming the club's top scorer with 25 goals this season in 28 appearances. The 2002/03 season was overshadowed by a few minor injuries that often forced him to watch. His record: 13 goals in 18 appearances. Despite his above-average goalscoring he missed promotion to the second division with the club in both years. When his former club FC Vaduz managed to do this, he moved back in the summer transfer period of 2003.

In Vaduz he was able to record his greatest success to date with the election of Liechtenstein Footballer of the Year . In the 2004/05 season he was only able to play 8 season games due to many injuries, before he showed consistent performances again in 2005. The next career highlight followed in 2008 with the championship title in the Challenge League and the associated promotion to the Axpo Super League . Fischer had a large share in the success with 10 goals this season. The first division season, however, developed into a disaster for the club and players. Vaduz immediately dismounted and Fischer was unable to score a single goal in 23 appearances this season. In addition, he injured his knee seriously at the end of the season and missed all preparation for the 2009/00 season

When he reported back from convalescence in August 2009, there was a momentous incident between him and the care team. In order to catch up with his teammates in terms of fitness, coach Pierre Littbarski had him complete a multitude of 600 meter sprints in the heat until Fischer collapsed unconscious and had to be transported away by an ambulance service. Previously, he had pointed out several times to the coach that he had reached the end of his strength. The incident was widely picked up by the Swiss media and cannibalized for weeks. Meanwhile, there was controversy between the player and the coach. Fischer accused Littbarski of having acted irresponsibly. This in turn accused the player that training under Felix Magath would be more intense and that a player would have to endure something like that. Furthermore, Fischer would have behaved irresponsibly because he consulted a private doctor after the incident and not the official doctor of the association. Since the incident, Fischer has officially been back in Vaduz's squad, but Littbarski has not been used in any competition game. As a consequence, he left the club in January 2010 for FC Chiasso .

After Littbarski was released, he returned to FC Vaduz after six months with seven goals in 14 games for Chiasso.

National team

In 2005 Fischer made his debut for the Liechtenstein national team for the first time . On September 7, 2005, he scored his first goal in a team jersey in a 3-0 victory in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup against Luxembourg . In the same year, another goal followed in the 1: 2 defeat against Portugal . By 2011 he had a total of 23 international matches for Liechtenstein, in which he scored two goals.
