Benjamin Gerschewitsch Wechter ( Russian Беньямин Гершевич Вехтер ; * 1939 in Bucharest ) is a Soviet - Moldovan theoretical physicist and university professor .

Life

When Bessarabia became part of the Soviet Union in 1940 as a result of the Hitler-Stalin Pact , the Wechter family returned to Chisinau . Benjamin Wechter graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at the Moldovan State University in Chisinau in 1961 . In 1965 he successfully defended his candidate dissertation on the effects of electron - phonon interactions in complex transition metals at the University of Kazan . He worked in the Quantum Chemistry Laboratory of the Institute of Chemistry of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences as a research assistant to Isaak Bersuker . In 1975 he successfully defended his doctoral thesis on the Jahn-Teller effect in molecules and crystals at the Institute for Chemical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union .

In 1991 Wechter emigrated to the USA . He taught and researched at Northwestern University and was a professor at the University of Chicago . His work on electron-phonon interactions in molecules and crystals was fundamental. He clarified the effect of the oscillation interaction on magnetic resonance spectra and optical spectra and developed the theory of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect in crystals. In his last years he dealt with medicine and biostatistics .

Wechter is married to the electrochemist and candidate of chemical sciences Sofia Markovna born. Bard stone.
