Mikhail Danilovich Kaplan

Michail Danilowitsch Kaplan ( Russian Михаи́л Дани́лович Капла́н ; * 1948 in Chisinau ) is a Soviet - Moldovan theoretical physicist and university professor .

Life

Kaplan graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Moldovan State University in Chisinau in 1969 . He worked in the Quantum Chemistry Laboratory of the Institute of Chemistry of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences as a senior assistant to Isaak Bersuker . In 1986 he received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences .

In 1991 Kaplan emigrated to the United States . He taught and researched at Boston University and was a professor at Simmons College of Arts and Sciences in Boston .

Kaplan's fundamental work revolves around the Jahn-Teller effect . He clarified the conditions for the order setting of Jahn-Teller centers in crystals and the character of the corresponding phase transitions . Together with others he developed devices for the ultrasonic testing of materials .
