Benjamin "Benny" Köhler (born August 4, 1980 in West Berlin ) is a former German soccer player . The midfielder was most recently under contract with the then second division club 1. FC Union Berlin .
Career
Köhler was flexible in the offensive and defensive areas. On the 14th matchday of the 2000/01 season, the Köhler, who grew up in the Märkisches Viertel , played his first Bundesliga appearance with Hertha BSC against his future club Eintracht Frankfurt . He was initially unable to assert himself in the Bundesliga and was loaned to the second division club MSV Duisburg in the following season. In 2003 he moved to the regional division Rot-Weiss Essen . With 13 goals scored, he contributed to the club's promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga . In the home game against FC Sachsen Leipzig he scored three goals within three minutes.
In 2004 he was signed by the then second division club Eintracht Frankfurt, where he scored seven goals in 29 games in the following season; Eintracht rose to the Bundesliga. He played six matches for Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup . Köhler contributed to the rise of Eintracht in the 2011/12 season by scoring nine goals and preparing eleven. This was his most successful season in professional football. In the following season Köhler was rarely used.
In January 2013 Köhler moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern . He signed a contract until 2014 and made his debut on matchday 20 in a 1-0 away win against TSV 1860 Munich on the starting line-up. For the 2013/14 season he moved within the 2nd division to 1. FC Union Berlin .
In February 2015, Köhler was diagnosed with a malignant tumor of the lymphatic system ( Hodgkin's lymphoma ) in the abdomen, which necessitated immediate therapy. Union Berlin then extended the contract with Köhler, which expired at the end of the season, for one year until June 30, 2016. As a sign of solidarity, Union Berlin and VfL Bochum interrupted their game on February 7th in the 7th minute of the game (Köhler wears the 7th minute of the game at Union) as a shirt number) to express common recovery wishes to Köhler, who was sitting in the stands. On July 23, 2015, the association announced that Köhler had recovered from his illness. On March 18, 2016, he celebrated his comeback in the home game against Eintracht Braunschweig (3-1) when he was substituted on after 77 minutes. At the beginning of April 2016 Union Berlin announced that, contrary to the original plan under Sascha Lewandowski , the contract with Köhler had been extended until 2017. In the summer of 2017, he ended his active career because of persistent knee problems.
Since October 2018, Köhler has been running an ice cream parlor in Berlin with his wife, with whom he has a daughter (* 2017).
