Benjamin Nicaise (born September 28, 1980 in Maisons-Alfort ) is a former French football player .

Career

Nicaise began his career in the AS Nancy youth team , where he was brought to the first team in 2000. In its first season, the club was fifth in Ligue 2 . 2001/02 the ninth place could be achieved. After finishing 15th in 2002/03 and sixth in 2003/04, the defensive midfielder moved to FC Metz in the summer of 2004 .

Nicaise made his debut in the top French division on August 7, 2004 against FC Nantes when he came on as a substitute for Hervé Tum in stoppage time in the second half . The game ended in a 1-0 win for Metz. This season he came on another 13 missions. Metz finished 16th in Ligue 1 and secured the league. He then left Metz and moved to the second division for SC Amiens , with whom he finished 16th in the final table of the 2005/06 season. After another fall season at SC, he moved to Belgium for RAEC Mons in winter 2006/07 . Mons was ninth in the league, in the 2007/08 season relegation was achieved with a 16th place.

In the summer of 2008, Nicaise signed with Standard Liège. Here he was able to celebrate the first championship title of his career, and the Supercup was also won. He made his debut at European club level when he came on in the 90th minute for Tomislav Mikulić in the third round of UEFA Champions League qualifying against Liverpool FC . In the following season, the club reached the quarter-finals in the Europa League and finished eighth in the championship, with the team reaching second place in Group B in the play-offs for the Europa League starting places.

In 2010 he moved to Lierse SK and after only six months was awarded to the Greek second division team Panthrakikos Komotini . In the summer of 2011 he went back to his former club RAEC Mons and ended his playing career here in January 2013.

After the active career

From summer 2017 Nicaise was team manager at Standard Liège . In May 2019 he became chief scout there, and from the 2020/21 season he will switch to the role of technical director.
