Benjamin Straumann

Benjamin Straumann (* 1974 ) is a Swiss historian of ideas and ancient history and an author. He is Alberico Gentili Senior Fellow at New York University and Associate Professor at the University of Zurich.

Life

He received his doctorate ( insigni cum laude ) from the University of Zurich after studying in Zurich , Rome and New York City . He was an Erasmus exchange student at the University of Rome III and a Samuel I Golieb scholarship in legal history at the New York University School of Law , visiting scholar at Columbia and Oxford Universities and a scholarship for advanced researchers from the Swiss National Science Foundation . He researches and teaches at New York University and the University of Zurich, where he has been a private lecturer since his habilitation (2016) . Together with Nehal Bhuta ( EUI ) and Anthony Pagden ( UCLA ) he is the editor of the book series “The History and Theory of International Law” published by Oxford University Press .

His research interests are Greek and Roman political and legal thinking, early modern political thinking, natural law theories, the history of international law, the reception of antiquity in early modern Europe, constitutionalism and republicanism.

His monograph Crisis and Constitutionalism: Roman Political Thought from the Fall of the Republic to the Age of Revolution was awarded the István-Hont Book Prize from the University of St Andrews for the best book on the history of ideas of 2016.
