Benno Orenstein (* 2. August 1851 in Poznan , † 11. April 1926 in Berlin - Wannsee ) was a German businessman and engineering - entrepreneurs as co-founder of the company Orenstein & Koppel .

Life

Benno Orenstein was of Jewish descent. In 1876, together with Arthur Koppel (1851–1908), who left in 1885, he founded a trading company for light rail equipment , quick-to-assemble tracks and tipping platforms . From this he developed the manufacturing company Orenstein & Koppel (locomotive and wagon construction with accessories, later also excavators), which was globally active, was converted into a stock corporation in 1897 and in 1930 employed around 8500 people at home and abroad. In 1941 it was "Aryanized" .

Honor grave

Orenstein was married to Rosa geb. Landsberger (1859–1941) and thus a brother-in-law of Hermann Aron . His son and successor in the company management was Alfred Orenstein (1885–1969). His daughter Editha (1884–1943) married Arthur Zarden, who later became State Secretary in the Reich Ministry of Finance , in 1920 . Benno Orenstein found his final resting place in an honorary grave in the WT field at the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee .

Benno Orenstein was awarded the honorary titles of Commerce Councilor (1905) and Privy Councilor of Commerce (1913).

The “Benno Orenstein Prize” has been awarded since 1987 to promote communication between the university and industry .
