Life

Mukherjee was born with severe visual impairment - one eye was blind and the other was myopic . Since childhood he was interested in painting and became a student of the painter Nandalal Bose in Shantiniketan. He combined influences of modern art from the West with traditions of Indian painting. In the 1930s he himself became a teacher at the art faculty at Shantiniketan University. During a study trip to Japan in 1937 he learned calligraphy, among other things, and later used East Asian techniques in his work. Mukherjee created frescoes and wall paintings on buildings of the university, which are among his most important works. Well-known students of Mukherjee were the painter KG Subramanyan , the sculptor Somnath Hore and the filmmaker Satyajit Ray . In 1949 he became director of the Nepalese National Museum in Kathmandu . In the early 1950s he moved to Masuri and opened his own painting school, which had to close again after a short time due to financial difficulties. He stayed in Shantiniketan until the end of his life. In 1957 he went completely blind after an eye operation, but continued to paint.

In 1972 his former student Ray made the documentary The Inner Eye about Mukherjee. In 1974 Mukherjee was awarded the Padma Vibhushan . 46 of his works are in the possession of the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi .
