The Benthophilinae are a subfamily of the gobies . The subfamily was established in 1927 by the Russian ichthyologists D. Beling and BS Iljin, but the associated genera were later added to the subfamily Gobiinae . In 2009 the Benthophilinae were newly diagnosed by Neilson and Stepien as an endemic goby subfamily in the Pontocaspic region .

distribution

The small fresh and brackish water fish are found on the shores of the Black , Azov and Caspian Seas and in the incoming rivers. Five species from this subfamily spread over Central Europe in the last few decades and were able to colonize other catchment areas , e.g. B. the Rhine . Two species of the Benthophilinae, the marbled goby and the black-mouthed goby , got into the North American Great Lakes through the ballast water of ships and are now among the most common bottom fish there.

features

The Benthophilinae are small to medium-sized gobies. Their hallmarks include sensory papillae , which lie in six to seven rows below the eyes, tubular anterior nostrils, the posterior ones are near the eye sockets , and upper pectoral fin rays, which are surrounded by fin membrane. A swim bladder is missing. The eggs are medium to large in size and contain little yolk . A pelagic larval stage is absent. From the subfamily Gobiinae, to which the genera of the Benthophilinae were previously counted, the Benthophilinae can mainly be distinguished by the number of vertebrae. They have a total of 28 or more vertebrae, including 18 to 22 caudal vertebrae (all vertebrae behind the anus).
