The marbled goby ( Proterorhinus marmoratus ) is a species of the family of gobies (Gobiidae). It reaches a total length of 11.5 cm and occurs in European fresh and brackish water . It is often confused with the bullhead , but can be distinguished from it by the pelvic fins; in the bullhead they are separate as in most fish, in the marbled goby they are fused together like a suction cup.
features
The marbled goby has a stocky body, with a short and high head. The head is higher than it is wide, its length is 4 1/3 times the total length. The muzzle is blunt, both jaws are of the same length and have thick lips. The front nostrils end in tubes about 1 mm long that hang over the upper lip. The interpupillary distance is less than the diameter of the eyes. The tail fin stalk is higher than it is wide. Marbled gobies are yellowish, greenish or brownish gray in color, the males are black at spawning time. All fins have rows of brown dots. There is a dark spot under the eye, which is lined with white at the back, and a black, light-lined triangle at the beginning of the caudal fin.
- Fin formula : dorsal 1 VI – VII / 0, dorsal 2 I / 14–18, anal I / 11–16.
- Scale formula : (36) 38–46 (48) (mLR)
distribution
The original range of the marbled goby are rivers that flow into the Black Sea , the Caspian Sea and the Sea of Azov . In the Danube they originally only occurred up to the mouth of the March . It also occurs in Lake Neusiedl and in lagoons at the edge of the seas and in the two rivers Struma and Evros , which flow into the Aegean Sea .
Lately, this species has spread through the Main-Danube Canal into the Rhine . The animals were probably introduced into North America through ballast water . There are deposits in the St. Clair River , the Detroit River and in the western part of Lake Erie .
