Benzo [ a ] anthracene is a chemical compound from the group of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and contains four linked six-membered rings. It is one of 16 PAHs that have been included in the list of priority pollutants (EPA list) by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is on the EU list of PAHs that are recommended to be examined.

Occurrence

Benzo [ a ] anthracene is found in coal tar . In addition, it is one of the most common PAHs in the environment. With its four benzene rings , it is relatively volatile. Like other PAHs, it is a product of incomplete combustion and is found in grilled meat products, tobacco smoke, automobile and industrial exhaust fumes, among other things. Food and water can be contaminated by exhaust gases.
