history
The first settlement in the area was established in 1828 with a Christian socialist community called Lyceum Village . However, the project failed until 1844 due to a lack of influx.
Today's Berea was spun off from Middleburg Township in 1850 . It is related to the quarrying of sandstone on the banks of the Rocky River that was used on-site to make grindstones . Production ended in 1946 when silicon carbide finally caught on as an abrasive.
Baldwin-Wallace College , a renowned art and music college, is based in Berea . The Cleveland Browns' offices and training grounds are also in the city.
